After a stop-start 2020/21 season due to lockdowns, the MSYFL Summer League gave the boys an opportunity to play some more competitive football over the holidays. Following league games played from June to August the finals days came on August 30th and GBYFC U12 Purple were facing Fareham Town Youth FC Warriors for the Div 2 trophy.
Earlier in the group stages the two teams shared the points following a 1-1 draw so the boys knew they had to put in a shift to come out on top. From kick-off Purples put the Warriors under pressure, not giving them time to play – with much of the first 20 minutes played in the Warriors half. But with some amazing saves from the opponent’s goalkeeper, including a rocket from Oliver Lavin, Purples couldn’t find the net from open play. After winning a corner Blake Moreton put the ball into the box, falling to Freddie Norris to put the ball into the back of the net to open the scoring. Purples continued to dominate and after winning another corner the ball fell to Jamie Ross, who knocked it forward towards Freddie Norris to slot it away for his second of the day. Before the half time whistle blew Freddie made it a hat-trick to bring purples in 3-0 at the break.
The team started the second half with the same energy but the Warriors were looking to get back into the game still, and after a strong forward run from their striker won a penalty and chance to get a foothold in the game. Thomas Parkinson stood strong in the goal and when they stepped up to take the spot kick the ball flew wide of the post.
Purples continued to control the game with a brace for Blake Moreton and another from Jack Barker to finish the game 6-0.
Stepping up to collect their winners’ medals and lift the trophy the players could hardly contain their joy – made even more special by this being the team’s first trophy win. Really great attitude and performance from all the players today with a well-deserved win and great end to the summer.
Bring on the new season!! UTB
